Feel Confident In Your Workout With prAna

Wearing a killer outfit gives you a huge confidence boost, which in turn helps you crush your workout! Try prAna's activewear line for some confidence!

PrAna Gear Fueling Your Confidence

I don’t know about you… but when I have a killer gym outfit on, I completely crush my workout. Have you ever noticed that when you like what you are wearing and/or how you look, you get more accomplished? That’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently. Here’s my theory:

When you feel confident, you can conquer the world.

That feeling, or that mindset, spreads into everything that you do. And sometimes, a killer outfit does just that. It gives you CONFIDENCE!

Studies have been done that show the positive correlation between confidence and athletic performance. Other research has been done regarding self-confidence as it relates to motivational processes.

Spring Styles from prAna

So, it’s my pleasure to be able to work with a company like prAna and give you a sneak peek into their Spring collection. This line has a TON of activewear pieces that will set your confidence on fire! I received 2 selections from prAna for free, but all thoughts and opinions are my own. If you have never heard of prAna, let me tell you why I love the company.

The California-based company, prAna, that creates stylish and sustainably made clothes. prAna has a strong dedication to their community and the world. From prAna’s website,

“We go out of our way to ensure the impact we make on the world is mostly confined to our aesthetic. By using materials and partnering with companies and factories that adhere to strict guidelines for safety and efficacy, we’re able to make the beautiful and functional products we love, in a way that we can all feel good about.”

But, my absolute favorite thing about prAna is their devotion to giving back.

“Throughout the year we partner with several local and international charities to help make a difference. Whether it’s cleaning up beaches here in Southern California or sending aid to areas affected by natural disasters, we continue to find ways to serve our community.”

My prAna Picks

The first piece is the Mika Strappy Top. As you can see, this top is AMAZING. Nothing makes me feel more confident than being able to (successfully) pull off a strappy back tank. Having a bigger chest has made this more difficult, but the Mika has a built in cami bra. So I can do my stretches and yoga without a problem — and look damn good doing it!

The second prAna piece is the Juniper pant. These pants feel like jersey – and they are ultra comfortable. The are fitted through the knee and flare out at the calf.

Why Gym Buddies Make the Best Friends

AFFILIATE

Fitness friends make the best friends! So many people are looking for their swolemate, or looking for couple exercises, couple workouts, or couple fitness. Why not find a workout buddy that can be your best friend? A workout buddy/fitness friend can be the motivation you need to work out and help you reach your goals!

Some of the biggest (and best) parts of life are the connections we make with others. We innately crave relationships with others. As human beings, we want and need to love, to be loved, to be accepted, and to be valued.

When we are alone, without contact, for an extended period of time, we crumble. Just think of Tom Hanks’ character in the classic movie Castaway... Now, think of Wilson, the volleyball that Hanks “befriended.” Case in point. Connection is not just a want. It’s a need. Even as kids, when we are left to our own devices, we created imaginary friends to play with. Our brains are wired to form relationships.

Without connections and relationships, life just doesn’t have the same meaning. Healthy relationships help us lead happier lives. The bonds help us deal with stress and get through hard times. It can make a difference when we have that “shoulder to cry on” or that friend “to lean on.” Furthermore, the impact we leave on others will eventually become the legacy that we leave behind. In successful relationships, we learn from one another; we grow with one another.

Every interaction plays a part… And I’m not just talking about romantic relationships. I mean friends, colleagues, acquaintances, etc. All of these types of relationships inevitably take work. Every exchange is a two-way street.

Healthy communication and support are some of the aspects that play a key role in the success (and failure) of our human-to-human connections. And while every relationship is different, there are some bonds that are more special than others.

Why You Should Find an Exercise Partner

1. Your PR's are their PR's (and vice versa!).

They’re in the gym with you, day in and day out. They see how hard you work for that new PR. They’re part of your journey to get there… So when you finally squat that 1 rep max… or deadlift heavier than ever before, it’s an adrenaline rush for them as well. You both reap the rewards of each others hard work. Double the fun!

2. You won’t be able to skip the gym.

It’s not just you in the gym anymore. Someone else is depending on you. So when you skip the gym, you’re not just hurting yourself. Not to mention, when you send your exercise friend that text saying “I’m soooo tired… can we skip today?” You’ve got someone to snap you out of your daze. They won’t let you press pause on your grind.

3. You have a spotter every time.

This is crucial for gym rats. Correct form is a safety issue. When you’re dealing with heavy duty equipment and weights, you can’t play around with your safety (and the safety of others in the gym!). So when you need a spot on the racks, you’ve got someone you can trust right there!

4. You have your very own cheerleader.

Having someone to tell you “You’re almost there” or “You got this!!” can be the difference-maker in your workout. Our minds can easily give up even when our bodies have more to give… Having someone cheering you on gives you that extra push (especially when all you want to do is drop the weights)

5. You have someone to laugh with.

Have you ever been working out and seen something SO funny? Then you want to laugh about it with someone but it was a “you had to be there” moment? (For example, when you see one of those muscle mania dudes trip over a weight and pretend like it never happened). Having a gym partner allows you to laugh off the craziness.

Why Gym Buddies and Exercise Friends Make the Best Friends

1. You celebrate the good things even more.

You both see how hard each of you work on a regular basis. Inside the gym, outside of the gym. You both have seen the sacrifices made to get to where each of you are. So when a goal is reached, or something else happens, it’s FANTASTIC!

2. You have accountability outside of the gym.

When you want to go to Bruster’s and binge eat ice cream… when you want to order french fries instead of broccoli… or when you want to order a soda instead of water… You’ve got someone to remind you of your goals. They can be strong for you when you’re feeling weak.. And vice versa! You have someone you can text when the chicken you meal prepped last Sunday is bland and gross but you’re still eating it anyway… and they get it.

3. You don’t feel as embarrassed to fail in front of them.

They’ve seen you fail plenty of times in the gym. And they’ve seen you when you physically look the WORST. So if you’re struggling with something personal and not gym-related, you have someone you can go to, who won’t judge you for ugly-crying… or for looking (and/or) like you spent a few nights in a dumpster.

4. Their goals are in line with yours.

Yes, they want to work out. So those goals are the same. But, I’m also talking about the bigger picture. You both value strength, health, self-care, etc. You may not agree on everything. You may have your own paths to take in life. But, you have a solid foundation and bond between the two of you that you may not have with others. It’s really special!

5. You can go on a bestie-date that doesn't have to cost money.

Now, I don’t know about you all… but I’m all about saving a dollar or two (or more…)! And if you want to get out of the house with a friend, why not just hit up the gym for a gym and gossip date? You’re both already members of the gym, so you can go hang out and not spend money like you would if you were at the movies, out to eat, etc.

Working Out With an Exercise Partner

When I first started working out, I tried to avoid working out with a partner. I avoided it like the plague. Sure, I had a personal trainer (and even THAT took a lot of mental convincing to get accustomed to!). But they weren’t working out with me. They were creating my workouts for me and making sure that I was doing every exercise correctly (and pushing me past my mental blocks!). I was convinced that working out with a partner would hinder the pace, the effort, and the feel of my workouts. I wanted it to be just me and my music. But, you know what they say, right? You can’t knock it until you try it.

Well, I tried it. It first started out as personal training (I was the trainer, training my colleague who was “sweating for the wedding”). But when I’d be short on time after work, I decided to work out with her. To make a long story short, the best type of friendship evolved… and I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. So, I encourage every one of you reading this article to find an exercise friend.. And reap the benefits!

How It All Began: Cardio, Weights, & Protein Shakes

What’s the story behind the creation of Cardio, Weights, & Protein Shakes? Wow, what a loaded question. I won’t bore you with the long story but I won’t tease you with the short story either; it’s all about the happy medium, right?

Untitled

So here goes!

Body image is something I have struggled with for most of my life. So much of my self-value has been placed on how I looked, which then dictated how I felt. My self-worth was determined by if I’d exercised that day or how much I’d eaten that day. I was miserable… but never miserable enough to make a change. The picture to the right was taken a few months before I started my fitness journey.

In 2012, as a junior at UGA, I decided to start going to the gym. I had to get braces that year for an upcoming jaw surgery… and I figured if my face was going to suck, my body should be amazing. I laugh at myself now for this mentality! My workouts consisted of cardio, cardio, and more cardio. The treadmill, the track, and the elliptical were my go-to’s. I lost a lot of weight that year (see picture below)… but I still wasn’t happy. In retrospect, I know now that I may have changed my exercise habits, but I never really changed my mentality (or my eating habits). Over the next 3 years, I had an “off and on” relationship with working out/cardio. Just as I went off and on with diets. My weight fluctuated and I tied my happiness to the number on the scale.

IMG_4780

In February of 2015, I started working out with a personal trainer at the local LA Fitness. I’d previously worked out with 2 trainers but I didn’t have the same results… and here’s why. From my first session with JQ, I could tell how knowledgeable and passionate he was about hIMG_8840is job. His workouts were creative, challenging, and (I hate admitting this…) also fun. But there was another layer to our trainer-client relationship.

JQ graduated from the high school that my elementary school students would someday go to. He lived one street down from the school I worked at. These schools are Title 1, with a very at-risk student population (70%+ Free and Reduced Lunch)… and if you know me, you know that I am extremely passionate about closing the achievement gap in schools (as well as the race and socioeconomic aspects involved).

During our sessions, JQ and I had real conversations: about race, about poverty, about his experiences and struggles growing up, about my experiences working with children who IMG_7907sometimes wouldn’t know where their next meal was coming from. His story in becoming a personal trainer was something that I wanted to share with my students (see future post about this!). Long story short, we were invested in each other’s success. Not only did he inspire me to better myself, he showed me how to do it too. My sporadic gym sessions became a daily occurrence as I was eager to learn something new to try or work towards a goal we’d set.

Since I started going to the gym everyday, it was all I could think about… and all I could post about on my instagram. My frequent fitness posts frustrated some of my friends, so I decided to create an “anonymous” account to showcase my workouts, accomplishments, struggles, and more. Over the next months, my passion grew. I wanted to learn more about fitness, healthy eating, wellness, etc. Not only that… but also, I wanted to show others what I learned. I wanted to share my experience.

As a counselor, I know that telling our personal stories can be IMG_4586therapeutic and empowering… just what I needed. Since my instagram was “anonymous,” I wanted community with people who loved fitness as much as I did. I became ambassadors for some organizations and joined groups for people with similar interests. From their expertise, I realized that I needed more than just an Instagram. So, I started my blog to be able to share more about my story and hear from others too… (since Instagram captions can’t be too long without losing the follower’s interest!). It only made sense to add the other social media outlets as well. So, I created a Twitter, a Pinterest account, and a Facebook page all for Cardio, Weights, & Protein Shakes… and that’s how it all started.

Make sure to follow me on Twitter and Pinterest, as well as like the Cardio, Weights, & Protein Shakes page on Facebook!

Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k: Looking for things to do with your dog? Try a dog friendly 5k! Dog friendly races are really hard to find (and dog friendly events in general) but this dog run / pet run is one you can't miss!

The Best Pet-Friendly 5k

Do you like running or walking? Do you love running or walking with your dog? If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, then check out the Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k & 1K Fun Run! Atlanta Lab Rescue is a non-profit rescue organization that “identifies and rescues Labrador Retrievers and Lab Mixes from overwhelmed shelters and abusive situations and place them in secure, loving homes.” This is near and dear to my heart because my sweet pup, Ally, is a Lab! I love animals and I love to support local shelters and rescue groups. What a fun way to support a good cause and get exercise!

Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k

I ran in the Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k (and my 77 year old dad ran the 1k Fun Run!) in November last year. So here’s my rundown and recap of the event.

I was very impressed with the publicity for the event. They did great work getting their information and their event out there! So many events leave their runners with pertinent questions (i.e. Where do I park?)… Not the ALR! They were very specific with their instructions on where to park, how to get to the event, etc.

Atlanta Lab Rescue 5kAtlanta Lab Rescue 5k Pre-Race: The morning of the event, my parents and I arrived at the event early to get our bearings and to let the dogs sniff out the area.  I highly recommend doing this for any event that you bring your canine friend to. The more aware of their surroundings, the more comfortable they will feel. There was ample parking, which was a huge plus… Who else hates walking almost a mile just to get to the race?!

The Course: I, personally, enjoyed the course. It didn’t have any narrow trailing (which is always awkward when a large group of people are running). It was easy to spread out and have your own space! Ally also loved the course… Grass, pavement, dirt – she was happy! Bonus: NOT TOO HILLY!!

Post-Race: There was an awards ceremony after the 5k and before the 1k Fun Run. I really enjoyed this piece because it recognized not only the human runner, but the dog runner as well! I’m a sucker for things like that. Additionally, there were dog bowls filled with water, and post-race snacks and refreshments, at the finish line. They did their part in taking care of the runners!

My dad participated in the 1k Fun Run with his rescue Lab, Lucy. She was found by an abandoned truck in south Georgia with her 3 siblings. One of my sorority sisters from UGA found the puppies and posted on Facebook. Knowing my dad’s big heart for dogs, I immediately sent him the pictures… and in less than 5 days, Lucy was in our arms in Marietta, GA! The 1k was a perfect distance for them. My dad is in his late 70’s, and Lucy was only 7 months old.

Congratulations, Dad & Lucy, on finishing your first race!

September Blogging Report

I’m starting something new.

What started out as a strictly fitness Instagram, which then grew into a health, wellness, & fitness social media brand, is now all of the above mentioned, as well as a business of blogging helper. I have learned so much during the last year of blogging and starting my business…that I knew I had to share it with you all! My vision and mission when I started Cardio, Weights, & Protein Shakes was to help others. Originally, I thought I could only help others with workout ideas. Now, I know it’s so much more. I can inspire others, motivate others, guide others, etc. in more than just the gym. I can also share my knowledge and experience in the blogging world as well. My plan is to start publishing a monthly blogging report… and since September is winding down, I’ll start it with the September Blogging Report.

I can inspire others, motivate others, guide others. Click To Tweet

Here’s how it’s gonna go down:

  1. I’m going to set goals for each month. Goals for my health and wellness; Goals for my career; And last but not least, goals for my blog and business
  2. Then, I’m going to hold myself accountable for the goals I set in the previous month. Did I reach them? How did I do it? If I didn’t reach my goal, what can I do differently next time?
  3. I will go over my website stats for the month. Increase in visits and clicks? Decrease? What can I attribute the changes to?
  4. I will summarize any new partnerships or campaigns that occurred over the month.
  5. And, finally, once I start using affiliate links and ads, I will detail my stats with those, as well.

Now that I’ve set my standards for these check-ins, let’s dive in to the September Blogging Report! Shall we?!

Since i didn’t outline my goals for this month, I will start with my goals for October.

October Goals:

  • Reach 1,000 Facebook and Twitter followers: I currently have 812 Facebook Fans and 630 Twitter Followers.
  • Publish at least one post a week: It’s time for me to stop slacking!
  • Co-start a Facebook Group for Health and Wellness: Already in the works! Hopefully will be jump started in the next few weeks!
  • Figure out how to efficiently and effectively use Google Analytics for my site stats: As a result, I can include my stats in my monthly blogging reports!
  • Drink at least 2 full water bottles a day: Ok, here’s my non-blogging related goal. I recently got on a Sparkling Water kick (check out how I got off my soda addiction here!) and I want to continue the habit, whether with sparkling or regular water.

September Campaigns:

  1. AfterShokz #AwareWithPink
  2. Gerolsteiner Sparkling Water
  3. PrAna Fall Style #WeirdWorkout

Well, there you have it: my September Blogging Report. I can’t wait to see how this month unfolds! What are your goals for the month?
