The Best Pet-Friendly 5k
Do you like running or walking? Do you love running or walking with your dog? If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, then check out the Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k & 1K Fun Run! Atlanta Lab Rescue is a non-profit rescue organization that “identifies and rescues Labrador Retrievers and Lab Mixes from overwhelmed shelters and abusive situations and place them in secure, loving homes.” This is near and dear to my heart because my sweet pup, Ally, is a Lab! I love animals and I love to support local shelters and rescue groups. What a fun way to support a good cause and get exercise!
I ran in the Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k (and my 77 year old dad ran the 1k Fun Run!) in November last year. So here’s my rundown and recap of the event.
I was very impressed with the publicity for the event. They did great work getting their information and their event out there! So many events leave their runners with pertinent questions (i.e. Where do I park?)… Not the ALR! They were very specific with their instructions on where to park, how to get to the event, etc.
Pre-Race: The morning of the event, my parents and I arrived at the event early to get our bearings and to let the dogs sniff out the area. I highly recommend doing this for any event that you bring your canine friend to. The more aware of their surroundings, the more comfortable they will feel. There was ample parking, which was a huge plus… Who else hates walking almost a mile just to get to the race?!
The Course: I, personally, enjoyed the course. It didn’t have any narrow trailing (which is always awkward when a large group of people are running). It was easy to spread out and have your own space! Ally also loved the course… Grass, pavement, dirt – she was happy! Bonus: NOT TOO HILLY!!
Post-Race: There was an awards ceremony after the 5k and before the 1k Fun Run. I really enjoyed this piece because it recognized not only the human runner, but the dog runner as well! I’m a sucker for things like that. Additionally, there were dog bowls filled with water, and post-race snacks and refreshments, at the finish line. They did their part in taking care of the runners!
My dad participated in the 1k Fun Run with his rescue Lab, Lucy. She was found by an abandoned truck in south Georgia with her 3 siblings. One of my sorority sisters from UGA found the puppies and posted on Facebook. Knowing my dad’s big heart for dogs, I immediately sent him the pictures… and in less than 5 days, Lucy was in our arms in Marietta, GA! The 1k was a perfect distance for them. My dad is in his late 70’s, and Lucy was only 7 months old.
Congratulations, Dad & Lucy, on finishing your first race!
I highly recommend the Atlanta Lab Rescue 5k and 1k Fun Run. If you love dogs, and want to support an amazing organization, please consider this race! You can register by visiting the Atlanta Lab Rescue website!!
